A Sonnet About Flowers

I sit on my desk with the day sinking

Reading poetry with my glasses off

The buildings are geometric blurs

And the hillside green and amber light

The door is open and someone waves

I can’t tell who it is but I wave back

I turn back to poem in a Levine book you gave me 20 years ago

About a book of poetry Levine’s brother had given him 20 years before that

You gave me two books of poetry and a bottle of Absolut

I read them on the floor in my freezing apartment

Because I had no chairs but I had two books of poetry and a bottle of Absolut

Tom Petty says that you belong among the wildflowers

I’ve seen you puttering amongst the chickens and tomatoes

He says you belong somewhere you feel free but I suspect you are already there
